Mountain Biking the Alta Via del Sale: Two Days from the Alps to the Sea (Low Cost)

Riding along the Alta Via del Sale means traveling one of the most spectacular gravel roads in Europe: a high-altitude military track winding between 1,800 and 2,200 meters, suspended between the Cuneo Alps and the Ligurian Sea.

Taking on this adventure in two days, while keeping costs down and relying on the safety of a Piedmont Region Cycling Guide / FCI Guide, is the perfect balance of adrenaline, low-cost logic, and total technical peace of mind.

The Alta Via del Sale runs through isolated areas with very few water points and weather conditions that can change rapidly at high altitudes. A certified guide not only ensures pace management and perfect knowledge of the route but also provides immediate mechanical assistance for your bike, first aid skills, and a cultural and naturalistic overview of the area (from the lunar geology of the Carsene to the history of the 19th-century forts).

To keep the experience accessible to everyone without compromising safety, the trip is structured as follows:

overnight stay in a mountain hut: half-board (dinner, dorm-style accommodation, and breakfast) ensures an authentic Alpine atmosphere at the lowest possible cost;

no support vehicle (light logistics): you travel in bikepacking mode or with a light backpack (maximum 15-20 liters); the guide will help you optimize your gear to avoid expensive luggage transport services.

Bike type: Hardtail or Full-suspension Mountain Bike (MTB), or E-MTB (in this case with excellent battery management to cover the first day's elevation gain).

Required level: Cyclists in good physical shape with basic skills in riding on dirt roads and Alpine slopes.

What to bring: Compact backpack, layered clothing (windproof/waterproof gear mandatory for high altitudes), spare inner tube kit, and a sleeping bag liner for the hut.
