Maiella: A Hidden Gem Among the Abruzzo Mountains

Skiing in Maiella (or Majella) is like gliding on a dream, through the soft curves of a goddess. Seen from Pescara, the massif resembles the profile of a woman lying on her back asleep: from this imaginary line, which becomes even more pronounced at sunset, the local legend of the goddess Maia was born. A beautiful Pleiad, she fled with her son wounded in battle. Upon arriving in Abruzzo, after her son’s death, she was buried on a mountain, which took the name Maiella from her.

Navigating the Abruzzo mountains can initially be a bit difficult: the orderly radial arrangement of Alpine valleys here gives way to a maze of valleys and mountain massifs arranged quite randomly. Maiella, in particular, is characterized by numerous peaks exceeding 2000 meters, including Monte Amaro (2793 m), one of the classic ski touring destinations and the second highest Apennine peak after Corno Grande in Gran Sasso. Beyond the mountains, Maiella offers karst plateaus, deep valleys, and a rich variety of environments, from beech forests to alpine meadows. At the center of Maiella stands Caramanico Terme, a charming village that serves as a base for most groups of ski tourers visiting these mountains. A few kilometers from Caramanico Terme we find Passo di San Leonardo: a strategic hub connecting Maiella with the city of Sulmona or the ski resort of Campo di Giove. It is from this pass that many of the most beautiful ski touring trips depart.

These areas are among the snowiest in Italy: the Abruzzo mountains, in fact, and particularly Maiella, receive eastern currents laden with moisture crossing the nearby Adriatic Sea. This particular situation allows for abundant snowfall during the winter period. The rounded shapes and open slopes of the massif’s mountains allow the sun to quickly transform and consolidate the snow cover, making it excellent for ski touring.

Practicing ski touring in Maiella is an unforgettable experience for several reasons. Often the snow cover is abundant and well-transformed, a real delight for ski tourers seeking “firn.” After a snowfall, if you wisely choose the right slopes, it is also possible to ski in beautiful powder, but beware: at these latitudes it has a short shelf life due to the heat and you must never underestimate the action of the wind, sometimes very strong, which can ruin beautiful slopes of fresh snow in just a few minutes. However, one sunny day and a clear night are enough to restore everything to order.

Another good reason to visit these beautiful mountains on skis is certainly the excellent Abruzzo hospitality. Even in the smallest villages it is possible to stay in welcoming hotels and enjoy excellent regional cuisine, delighting your palate with typical dishes such as lamb arrosticini, chitarrine with ragù, or sagne and chickpeas, just to name a few.

While at first glance these mountains offer ski touring routes that are all in all quite simple, it takes little to increase the “adventure factor.” In fact, ski touring in these parts can easily become a demanding activity, with nothing to envy from the more renowned ascents of the Alps. For the most demanding ski tourers, Maiella reserves a unique thrill: the Rave. These imposing couloirs, carved into the mountain slopes, offer adrenaline-filled descents and breathtaking views. Skiing in a Rava is an experience that also tests your technical climbing skills, with the use of specific equipment such as crampons and ice axes to overcome the steepest sections. It is then a matter of timing to catch the descent at the right time to enjoy fantastic turns in transformed snow that feels like velvet.

Perhaps the most famous and iconic of the Rave is certainly that of Giumenta Bianca on Monte Amaro, which leads to the summit of Maiella’s highest mountain: it is a wide couloir slope that, with an almost constant incline, gains over 1500 meters of elevation with relatively little horizontal distance. From the summit of Monte Amaro, with a bit of luck, you can enjoy a stunning panorama of the Abruzzo coast, the Adriatic Sea, and, beyond the sea, the more exotic mountains of Montenegro.

From legend to reality, Maiella is a massif that fascinates and conquers. A place where history, nature, and sport merge into a single experience. All you have to do is put on your skis and let yourself be conquered by its wild beauty.
