Arabel, exploratory ski mountaineering at 4000m in Kyrgyzstan

A fascinating spring ski mountaineering trip among the great mountains of Kyrgyzstan: immense pine forests quickly give way to high-altitude pastures and meadows, at the end of which countless glaciers appear, leading to peaks around 4,000 - 4,500 meters, many of which are unknown! Here, ski mountaineering is truly an exploratory experience: we are certainly far from fashionable resorts, crowded slopes, or even marked trails! The only possible encounters are with Kyrgyz shepherds or hunters who, riding legendary Kyrgyz horses with eagles perched on their arms, head up the valleys for the first spring hunts... The journey from Bishkek—the capital of Kyrgyzstan—to Tamga is an experience in itself: the road crosses passes through semi-desert mountains and then runs alongside the great Lake Issyk Kul, one of the deepest in the world. The landscapes become increasingly rugged among flocks of sheep and herds of horses, small villages where artisans still build wooden and felt yurts today: in the background, the Tien Shan mountains—the Celestial Mountains—invite exploration and a traveler's approach to ski mountaineering.

Travel program

Day 1: departure.

Day 2: arrive in Bishkek early in the morning; our Kyrgyz partners are waiting for us outside the airport with a private minivan, equipped with everything necessary for the trip. We then set off in a southeast direction towards Tamga: the village located on the shores of Lake Issyk Kul that will host us for the next few days. During the journey, we will stop to visit local communities, meet the Kyrgyz shepherds who still live a semi-nomadic lifestyle today and, with a little luck, the eagle hunters, for a unique experience. In the afternoon, arrival in Tamga and accommodation in the guest house.

Day 3: first day of ski mountaineering in the Arabel valley. We will dedicate time to checking each participant's safety knowledge and improving it within the group. Dinner and overnight stay in Tamga.

Day 4: ski mountaineering day in the Arabel valley: today and in the days to come, we will navigate at least partly "on sight." While the support of Sergej (responsible for on-site logistics) allows us to take advantage of some well-known itineraries in the early stages, we will enjoy exploring the area, taking pleasure in visiting slopes and glaciers that are likely little-known. Dinner and overnight stay in Tamga.

Day 5: ski mountaineering day in the Arabel valley. Return to Tamga in the afternoon, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6: ski mountaineering day in the Arabel valley. Return to Tamga in the afternoon, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7: ski mountaineering day in the Arabel valley. Return to Tamga in the afternoon, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8: day dedicated to the return from Tamga to Bishkek, with new insights into the territory and the Kyrgyz people. In the afternoon, a short visit to the city center. Overnight stay in a hotel.

Day 9: early morning departure from Bishkek, return home.

NB The program may undergo changes in the price/timetables/location of overnight stays due to the unavailability of services (flights/overnight stays) to be verified when booking. On site, in less than optimal weather and safety conditions, the guide will confirm the itineraries included in the program day by day.
