This first Basic Mountaineering Course was designed in collaboration with Globalmountain - Mountaineering School of the Cuneo Mountain Guides for all our traveling friends who follow us in ski touring, on trips around the world and along the Hautes Routes (Cuneo-Nice, Chamonix-Zermatt, Silvretta, Urner, etc.): with this training project we want to give them special attention, to make them more aware, conscious and confident of what they are doing whenever they need to put on crampons or use the ice axe to overcome a steep snow section; or when they need to rappel down one of the many "obligatory passages" that are regularly encountered especially along the Hautes Routes; or tackle short sections of rock climbing along normal routes and during various types of traverses.
At the same time, this course serves as a useful tool for those who frequent summer normal routes (independently or with the guidance of a mountain guide), which present the same difficulties listed above.
The location chosen for the 2026 edition of the course is Rifugio Remondino, in the upper Valle Gesso: this beautiful refuge owned by CAI Cuneo and managed with great professionalism by our friend Marco Ghibaudo and his team, offers an excellent alpine setting, with the summit of Argentera and Cima di Nasta in the background and the countless snow gullies, small rock walls equipped for climbing school, ideal for focusing on the details of mountain safety. An unmissable opportunity to spend a weekend high in the mountains while taking home a wealth of new technical knowledge.
Note: the course will be held for a maximum of twelve people (two groups of six with two Globalmountain mountain guides) and these will be the only dates scheduled in the Maritime Alps for 2026.
Travel program
DAY 1: meeting at 8:00 AM in Terme di Valdieri; after a brief briefing to check individual equipment, we transfer to Pian della Casa (approximately 1,700 m) to climb in about two hours to Rifugio Remondino (2,450 m). Lunch on your own and afternoon dedicated to analyzing basic rope techniques, learning the fundamental mountaineering knots (figure-eight, bowline, Machard self-locking knot) and learning to correctly wear the harness and accessory equipment (carabiners, sling loops and kevlar, etc.). Finally, the lesson will focus on understanding, evaluating and building anchors for mountain safety, and how to connect to them functionally. Dinner and overnight at the refuge.
DAY 2: early wake-up to take advantage of the morning for progression on snow.
"Cramponnage" is the technical term for using crampons and ice axes on classic terrain (gullies below normal routes, hard snow slopes during ski touring, etc.) and the CAI Chain - a short distance from the refuge - offers ideal terrain for learning the art of maintaining balance on crampons, testing their grip even on icy snow, and learning how to properly hold and use the ice axe. Some notes on the types of anchors that can be used on snow and on safety management enrich the day and make students aware of their capabilities. Dinner and overnight at the refuge.
DAY 3: wake up a bit more leisurely, breakfast and then off to rock school. Climbing shoes are not needed because this day is meant to be an introduction to climbing on easy grades: typical of the normal routes of many mountains and some sections of the Hautes Routes - up to grade 3 at most - they often inspire awe and create uncertainty, only to discover that, at this level of difficulty, hands and feet always find comfortable and secure holds and footholds. A bit of confidence and awareness and even these "obstacles" transform into stimulating moments of pleasant movement. The program is completed with learning the rappelling technique, also necessary on various occasions, and again everyone will discover a maneuver that provides fun with a touch of adrenaline.
