The Normal Route to Monviso is a relatively simple itinerary, but its demands are such that it cannot be classified as mere hiking.
The “Stone King” is the symbolic mountain of the Cuneo Alps: a dominant presence in the Piedmontese landscape and beyond, already known to the ancient Romans as Mons Vesulus (visible mountain), thanks to its unmistakable profile standing out along the western Alpine arc.
The ascent is long and complex: after passing Rifugio Quintino Sella, you cross Colle delle Sagnette and follow the mountain's southern slope. The departure is at dawn from the hut, climbing up to Passo delle Sagnette along a steep section equipped with chains. From the pass, you descend into the upper Vallone delle Forciolline, quickly reaching the base of Monviso's south face near Bivacco Andreotti. The final 500 meters of elevation gain develop along a varied and interesting route, alternating rock climbing passages with traverses and hanging snowfields.
The view from the summit is extraordinary: an unmissable destination for all mountain enthusiasts.
This program will lead you into the heart of the Cuneo mountains, one of the wildest and most pristine corners of the Alps. Due to these characteristics, it will be carried out with the accompaniment of UIAGM mountain guides from Globalmountain-Guide Alpine Cuneo, professionals specialized in high-altitude environments.
Travel program
DAY 1: Transfer to Pian del Re and hike up to Rifugio Quintino Sella; meet the guide directly at the hut at 5:00 PM for the briefing and gear check. Elevation gain: 620 m (approx. 2 hours and 30 minutes).
DAY 2: Wake up at 4:00 AM and breakfast at the hut. We'll climb to Passo delle Sagnette (2,991 m) via a protected route, already roped up and secure.
