Visolotto, Southeast Ridge and the traverse of its three peaks

The younger brother of Monviso, but no less elegant, Visolotto (3,348 m) appears from the Piedmontese plains as a sharp spire with a slender silhouette, rising next to the more imposing mass of the Stone King.

The Southeast Ridge offers a beautiful and scenic ascent. The start is reached from Rifugio Vallanta in about a two-hour walk to the Cadreghe di Viso. Sunny and full of color nuances, the Southeast Ridge offers a pleasant climb with difficulties around grade III, in sharp contrast to the dark and severe environment of the north face of Monviso, which is so close it feels within reach.

The ridge leads directly to the summit of Picco Montaldo (3,344 m), then continues—after a short descent and an elegant passage on more vertical rock—towards Picco Coolidge (3,340 m) and finally, more easily, to Picco Lanino (3,348 m), the highest point of Visolotto.

This program will take you into the heart of the Cuneo mountains, one of the wildest and most pristine corners of the Alps. Due to these characteristics, the trip will be led by UIAGM mountain guides from Globalmountain-Guide Alpine Cuneo, professionals specializing in high-altitude environments.

Travel program

DAY 1: Meet in Valle Varaita at 2:00 PM at Rifugio Alevè, in the hamlet of Castello di Pontechianale. The hike up to Rifugio Vallanta takes about two and a half hours. Dinner and overnight stay at the mountain hut (option to reach Vallanta by MTB or E-Bike: ask for info).

DAY 2: Depart from the hut at dawn to reach Colle delle Cadreghe in about two hours, where the Southeast Ridge begins. Once you've cleared the ridge and reached the three peaks of Visolotto, the descent is made by rappelling along the Normal Route, finally returning to the hut for a well-deserved beer. In the afternoon, return to Castello in about an hour and a half (or 30 minutes by bike).

NB The program may undergo changes in the price/timetables/location of overnight stays due to the unavailability of services (flights/overnight stays) to be verified when booking. On site, in less than optimal weather and safety conditions, the Alpine Guide will confirm the itineraries included in the program day by day.
