Argentera Normal Route

The iconic mountain of the Maritime Alps needs no introduction. At 3297 m, it is clearly visible from the Cuneo plain and is an ascent that every mountain enthusiast in the area should tackle at least once.

The Normal Route is a relatively easy mountaineering ascent, but not to be underestimated due to its length and exposure in some sections: after the steep climb to Passo dei Detriti, the route enters the southeast face of Argentera along the famous ledge, characterized by the three "Pas du Chat" (cat steps), where the uphill wall overhangs and requires extra attention. Today the route is well protected by stainless steel bolts with fixed carabiners, so — roped up and especially if accompanied by an alpine guide — you can traverse it with a certain peace of mind, while still enjoying the adrenaline of the steep slabs below. The summit then offers unique panoramas: being the highest peak of the Maritime Alps, the view spans from the city of Cuneo below and nearby Monviso, to the vastness of the Po Valley that fades away under the glaciers of Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn, then stretches towards the sea of the French Riviera and distant Corsica.

This program will take you into the heart of the Cuneo mountains, one of the wildest and most pristine corners of the Alps. Precisely for these characteristics, it will be carried out with the accompaniment of UIAGM Alpine Guides from Globalmountain – Guide Alpine Cuneo, professionals specialized in the high-altitude environment.

Travel program

Day 1: Ascent to Rifugio Remondino (2430 m), located in the upper Gesso Valley, in a panoramic position at the foot of the northern slope of Argentera and easily reachable via the trail that climbs the Valletta valley. Dinner and overnight at the hut, with half-board accommodation.

Day 2: Early wake-up at 6:00 AM, breakfast at the hut and departure for the summit. From Remondino, climb the debris slope leading to Passo dei Detriti (3122 m). During the ascent of the steep gully, you are surrounded by a wide rocky amphitheater bounded by Cima di Nasta, Cima Paganini, and Cresta Sigismondi. Once at Passo dei Detriti, the mountaineering part of the ascent begins: a long, exposed traverse, where you need to proceed roped up, followed by a series of steep gullies — sometimes icy — which, with easy and fun climbing, lead to the South Summit of Argentera (3297 m). The descent follows the ascent route.

NB The program may undergo changes in the price/timetables/location of overnight stays due to the unavailability of services (flights/overnight stays) to be verified when booking. On site, in less than optimal weather and safety conditions, the Alpine Guide will confirm the itineraries included in the program day by day.
