Meja, Provenzale, and Chambeyron: the three great peaks of the Maira Valley via their normal routes

Rocca la Meja, Rocca Provenzale, and Brec de Chambeyron: three great peaks that rise like Dolomite towers among the pastures, forests, and rocky expanses of the upper Maira Valley. This tour allows you to follow the normal routes of these prestigious summits in an escalation of beauty and challenge.

In short, after the first night at Rifugio Fauniera, we set off through the wide meadows of Colle Fauniera (straddling the Maira and Grana valleys) to climb Rocca la Meja via its Normal Route—an unexpectedly simple and fun itinerary given the verticality of the limestone walls that soar toward the sky from the Bandia meadows.

On the third day, we take the Normal Route of Rocca Provenzale, a slightly more technical itinerary that starts on quartzite slabs and ends with more vertical rock and a few athletic moves: an emotional arrival at the summit, with a guaranteed view.

The fourth day is a relaxing trek alongside the imposing Stroppia Waterfalls to leisurely reach the Barenghi Bivouac, perched on the shores of the beautiful Lake Vallonasso among immense scree slopes dominated by the impressive bulk of the Brec. After a self-managed evening (with dinner fully organized by the guide), we spend the night in the bivouac, with a guaranteed view of the stars.

Finally, during the fifth day, we make the ascent to Brec de Chambeyron, featuring two exciting pitches that lead directly to the panoramic summit.
The gastronomic side of this tour is also not to be overlooked: we start at Rifugio Fauniera, which will surprise us with its famous Castelmagno gnocchi, continue with Provençal-flavored specialties at Campo Base, and finish with a bivouac dinner with an old-world feel.

This program will lead you into the heart of the Cuneo mountains, one of the wildest and most pristine corners of the Alps. Due to these characteristics, it will be carried out with the accompaniment of UIAGM mountain guides from Globalmountain-Guide Alpine Cuneo, professionals specialized in high-altitude environments.

Travel program

DAY 1: meet at 6:00 PM at Rifugio Fauniera (Castelmagno, in the Grana Valley); briefing and individual equipment check. Dinner and overnight stay at the refuge.

DAY 2: after a relaxed start from the refuge, we climb Rocca la Meja via its Normal Route; descent along the same route and car transfer to the Maira Valley to the Campo Base refuge in Chiappera. Dinner and overnight stay at the refuge.

DAY 3: after breakfast, depart for the climb to Rocca Provenzale, which stands imposingly right in front of the refuge. The Normal Route features an initial section on easy rock slabs that require a somewhat winding and technical path. In the upper section, the route becomes steeper, turning into a short, panoramic summit ridge. Descent along the same route and return to the refuge. Dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 4: after breakfast, we set off for the long, leisurely walk that will take us to the Barenghi Bivouac: the trail first climbs the steep limestone wall where—close to the ascent route—the impressive Stroppia Waterfalls plunge down. Later, the route moves through vast high-altitude scree slopes overlooked by the rock faces of Buc de Nubiera, Parias Coupà, and at the end, highest of all, Brec de Chambeyron. Once we reach the Barenghi Bivouac—set in a beautiful location on the shores of Lake Vallonasso—we'll get organized for dinner and an unforgettable night under the stars.

DAY 5: at first light, we head toward the unmistakable Col des Terres Jaunes, where the route to the summit of the Brec begins; first along a sequence of ledges, rocky gullies, and short climbing passages, finally reaching the top of this prestigious mountain—the highest and most imposing in the Maira Valley—with two pitches of grade III/IV climbing. Descent along the ascent route and return to the valley crossing through Colle dell'Infernetto.

NB The program may undergo changes in the price/timetables/location of overnight stays due to the unavailability of services (flights/overnight stays) to be verified when booking. On site, in less than optimal weather and safety conditions, the Alpine Guide will confirm the itineraries included in the program day by day.
